This study used three methods for assessment, namely, observation, interview and rectal swab. The result of this research were the catering was good, because it met the standards of the Ministry of Health Regulation No. 1096 of 2011 on Hygiene and Sanitation Catering, but the lighting in the production area was still less than the standard, and there is one employee who detected E. coli excess in the body on examination of rectal swabs. Abstract

Domestic wastewater treatment is one of the environmental problems in Surabaya. Besides causing water pollution, wastewater also causeing health problems. A method to treat wastewater is Communal Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). The effluent of WWTP is then reused by residents. The study aimed to describe the WWTP in Kelurahan Simokerto, Kecamatan Simokerto, Kota Surabaya, and compare wastewater parameters to the regulation. The study is a descriptive observational and cross-sectional research. The method used is interview with WWTP organizer and laboratory examination on 5 samples of influent and effluent parameters include pH, BOD, COD, TSS, oil and grease. All of influent and effluent parameters have already met domestic wastewater quality standards in Peraturan Gubernur Jawa Timur No. 72 Tahun 2013 so the effluent is safe to be discharged into the environment. Since the influent and effluent is below the maximum level of quality standards, the Communal WWTP in Kelurahan Simokerto hasn’t already met standard for an appropriate WWTP. The experts need to do study about wastewater characteristics before building a WWTP so that the appropriate WWTP is obtainable. Moreover, they need to do in-depth study about factors that affect wastewater quality. It’s necessary to arrange detailed SOP for routine operations and maintenance of WWTP accompanied by improvement of understanding of the organizer and citizens about the importance of communal WWTP as well as how to operate and maintain.

Abstract

Garbage is one source of air pollution. Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is a result of the decomposition of garbage that has an odor like rotten eggs, that will cause odor in the surrounding area. The respiratory system is the most sensitive organ for H2S in the air, so if exposed to this gas continuously can cause respiratory complaints in humans. The purpose of this study was to analyze the levels of H2S in the Super Depo Sutorejo and respiratory complaints on officers. This study used an observational study with cross-sectional approach. The samples were 21 people. Data were analyzed decriptively. H2S measurements held at two spot in the morning and afternoon. The results showed H2S levels between 0.6 μg/m3 -1,4 μg/m3. The result was still below the quality standard East Java Governor Regulation Number 10 of 2009 which is 42 μg/m3 or 2 ppm. 16 people (76.2%) had experienced respiratory complaints. Perceived respiratory complaints included cough (57.1%), shortness of breath (23.8%) and itchy throat (52.4%). The conclusion of this study was H2S levels in Super Depo Sutorejo still below the quality standard established and the most respiratory complaints suffered by officer was cough.

Abstract

Benzene is an aromatic compound which is easy to evaporate that is found in fuel oil. Benzene in the air can affect to human’s health if inhaled because benzene can be metabolized in the body. The aim of this research was analyze benzene’s concentration in air on X’s fuel station in South Jakarta, urine trans,trans-muconic acid’s concentration, and health disturbance of fuel station’s employee. This research was a descriptive with cross-sectional study. There were 8 respondents in this research with defined criteria. X’s fuel station air benzene’s concentration be measured in 3 points (2 points in filling area and 1 point in office area) on 2 different times (in the morning and in the afternoon). The result of this research, X’s fuel station air benzene’s concentration were 0,025–0,233 ppm and there was no air benzene’s concentration more than the threshold values (0,5 ppm) in filling area or administration area. There were 3 of 8 respondents had trans,trans-muconic acid’s levels that is more than 500 μg/g creatinin. Health disturbance that experienced by workers were nervous system disorders (62%) and kidney disturbance (50%). Therefore, workers should use PPE such as respirator mask and company should do rotation for workers.

Abstract

Metal plating industry using hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) for main ingredient to coat metal. Chromium when contact with the body can cause various health effects. This study were analized the individual characteristics and the incidence of dermatitis on metal plating workers in Sidoarjo. This was a qualitative descriptive study using cross sectional design. Data were collected by questionnaire, observation sheet, interview guides and diagnosis sheet. Respondents were total population by the number of 10 metal plating workers. The individual characteristics sub-variables were age, type of work, working period and use of PPE. The incidence of dermatitis in the metal plating sub-variables were skin burn, dermal necrosis, dermal edema, erythema, skin redness and itching and chrome holes ulceration. There was a strong correlation between age and the incidence of skin burn (r = 0.618), as well as the type of work to the incidence of skin redness and itching, dermal necrosis and erythema with contingency coefficient (r) of 0.632; 0.626; and 0.504. In addition working period with chrome hole, skin redness and itching and skin burn has a strong correlation with contingency coefficients (r) of 0.707; 0.626; 0.539. There is also a strong correlation between the use of PPE with dermal edema incidence (r = 0.707). Metal coating workers were suggested more careful when performing plating work and always use PPE that can minimize the contact between the skin with hexavalent chromium.

This research was an analytic observational study with cross sectional method. The population of this study were the female students amounted to 969 people. The sample size in this study was using the simple random sampling proportion estimates method with the Lottery sampling technique so total respondens were 71 students. The relationship between variable was using the X2-test statistical test (chi-square). The results showed that 46 students and there was no relationship between the santri’s behavior with ARI. The associated variables with ARI incidence in women students was the physical environment included ventilation, air temperature, and occupancy density. The school manager should give the gauze in the ventilation to change the room air circulation and made a cleaning schedule for the students so they can have a responsibilities of the rooms hygiene.
